After much planning and day dreaming, we're on the road to California today (and ultimately, Oregon and Washington) for a well deserved vacation. Don't bother thinking you can break in and steal our beer; a house-sitter, two attack wiener dogs, and a security system will keep that in check.
First beer up on the California list is an absolute category killer, the Fourteenth Anniversary Ale from Firestone Walker. This is the fifth release from their barrel aged program, this beer was released in 2010 and has been aging since then.
What kind of beer is it, you ask? Everything - the brewmaster took five barrel aged beers and blended them together. They recommend pouring into a brandy snifter or wine glass, and you see a black color with hints of red and a wispy, barely there tan head. The aroma is an intense mix of molasses, toffee, cocoa, and stone fruits. Before you even take a sip, it's readily apparent this isn't a run of the mill beer. When you take a sip, you're blown away by a mix of flavors; toffee, bourbon, dark chocolate, leather, butter, sweet malt, and stone fruits. An amazing blend of amazing beers, and I'm blown away by the complexity and delicious flavors. Obviously, this one is headed for the Top 25. I doubt you'll find this beer just hanging around in a store near you, but based on this I think it's safe to say you should drink anything from Firestone Walker any time you see it, hands down.
Thing to Think About Today:
You know who else was happy to be on his way to California? LL Cool J, that's who:
