The Olympic Sport of People Watching

Beer #92 Cuvée René / Brouwerij Lindemans, Vlezenbeek, Belgium

A completely underrated hobby of mine is people watching.  I'm fascinated by observing people, what they're talking about, what they're wearing, their pets, and so on.  I had a front row seat on Saturday afternoon, as I took the R5 train into the city to meet Marci for drinks and beer shopping.  Ordinarily, the train is filled with depressed people commuting to and from work, but yesterday it was filled with two distinctly different yet oddly similar populations:

1. Old people from the suburbs on their annual trip into the city for the Philadelphia International Flower show, an event which brings tourists into the city to look at flowers.  Really just a scam to get you to spend a bunch of money and be stuck in a huge crowd in the convention center.
2. People in their very early 20's headed into the city for the Erin Express, an event that brings tourists into the city to drink beer in advance of St. Patrick's Day.  Really just a scam to get you to spend a bunch of money and be stuck in a huge crowd in a bar.

The first group was notable for several reasons, including but not limited to their matching outfits and complete lack of familiarity with the regional rail.  The second group was notable for several reasons, including but not limited to their matching outfits and to-go cups filled with whatever pre-game drinks were available..

I'm sure both groups were completely and utterly horrified by each other.  Isn't riding public transportation fun, kids?

Today's beer comes from Brouwerij Lindemans, a brewery most famous for their lambics.  The Cuvée René is a gueuze, which is a blend of aged lambics.  It pours a golden color, and you instantly pick up a sour citrus aroma.  With the very first sip, you find a carbonated mix of sour, tart, and apple flavors, with a clean, dry finish.  Very enjoyable, if you're into sours or lambics.

Thing to Think About Today:
In the spirit of the Main Line ladies who braved public transportation and some drunks just to see some flowers, I'll leave you to think about the Rolling Stones and their classic Dead Flowers.  Yes, there are better videos out there with better production values and sound, but it's amazing to see the Stones when they were at the absolute top of their game.  I'll allow arguments they hit their apex in '69 prior to the Altamont concert, but speaking generally, they were still the biggest act on the scene in '71.  Sorry for the tangent there.  Take it away, Mick!

  1. Geuze is technically a blend of one, two, and three year old lambics. However, some breweries cheat in their blends though they'll never admit to it.
