Heavenly Hellish

Beer #716 Hop Devil / Victory Brewing Company, Downingtown, PA
Previously from this brewery: A metric ass ton of beers

I have bad posture when I sit and type.  I have no idea what prompted me to type this, other than the fact that I'm sitting here hunched over the computer like a 98 year old, hammering away at the keys without noticing that sitting like this makes my back hurt.  Sometimes, I'm not as intelligent as I think I am.

Now that I'm sitting like a normal human, tonight's beer will be another from the archive, a Hop Devil from Victory Brewing.  You see a light, clear copper color and a lingering white head.  Your nose finds a citrus and earthy aroma mix, and your taste buds pick up the flavors of lemon and pine, with a touch of malt, and a dry, bitter finish.  Just the way an American IPA should taste.
Hop to it
Thing to Think About Today:
Another beer with a devil connection tonight, and while I usually go for something from the dark side, tonight I'll look upwards instead.  Going to close with The New Pornographers and the thankfully not religious All the Things That Go To Make Heaven and Earth.  The sound isn't completely outstanding on this live video, but this is a band I desperately want to see live one day, so we'll go with it.  Night all....

Y me?

Day #689 HopBack Amber / Troegs Brewing Company, Hershey, PA
Previously from this brewery: many beers

If there are an glaring typos today, it's because the 'y' key on my keyboard isn't working.  I mean, it's somewhat working, but I need to pound on it a bit to register a letter.  This laptop may not be long for this world, I fear.  Sigh.

The beer for today is a bottle of HopBack Amber from Troegs, which pours with a clear, bright amber color.  One thing about beers from Troegs - they're all attractive in the glass.  Hard to explain, but they are. Your nose finds aromas of caramel and some citrus, and when you drink it down there are flavors of caramel malt, lemon, bread, and some very mellow pine bitterness.  A well balanced beer, and at 6% ABV, very easy drinking.  Definitely a favorite of mine, particularly on days where I want some hop flavor, but don't want to be overwhelmed by bitterness.
Pretty, no?
Thing to Think About Today:
With HopBack in mind, I'm dropping some Baby Got Back in this space.  However, because I adore acoustic covers of rap songs, I present singer-songwriter Jonathon Coulton's version.  It's obviously awesome.  I seriously can not believe that I've never used this song in the space before; it's truly an all time great.  Hope you're all doing well and feeling good.

Day 685: Bullfrog Gouden Ezel

Today is my Mom's birthday. If I did my math correctly, she would have been 65 years old this year. But that fucker cancer got her early. I'll be toasting her this evening...just like Gary and I have done for the past two years on this date. I wish I was toasting with her instead.

The beer in the photo is the Bullfrog Gouden Ezel, an American wild ale. It poured a hazy dark gold color ale with a thin white head. It has a tart aroma reminiscent of vinegar. The flavor has unripe melon, a soft tartness and some crackers to it. It is a very easy to drink sour beer.

Day 667: Yards Brewing Company Pynk

I have mixed feelings on all the pink-hued products that get shoved down our throats this month, but nothing I wrote didn't make me sound like an uptight, self-righteous prick so I'm letting it go. I just ask that you think twice about purchasing that pink product to help fight breast cancer. What organization is getting the money? Are they directly doing research, education or patient outreach? Wouldn't you be better off writing a check to a well established research group rather than overpaying for a pink water bottle? Be smart.

One pink product that I didn't mind pouring down my throat was the Pynk tart berry ale, which is brewed by Yards Brewing CompanyYards is donating $1 from each case of Pynk sold to the Tyanna Foundation, which supports local organizations throughout mid-Atlantic region to treat and care for breast cancer patients.

It poured a rosy brown ale with a pale cream color head. It had a strong berry aroma and the flavor was nutty and full of berry notes. Pynk is brewed with tons of fresh raspberries and sweet and sour cherries. I think the addition of the cherries definitely helps give it a tart, crisp refreshing quality rather than letting it get overly sweet. I also noticed that it has more malt flavor than many other fruit beers that I've tried.

Monkey Business

Day #665 White Monkey / Victory Brewing Company, Downingtown, PA
Previously from this brewery: Plenty, they're close by my house

Up early today, but I guess that's okay because today is my Mom's birthday!  Best wishes for a good day, Mom :)

So you get a quick beer review, because that's the way it goes.  I have a bunch of old beer reviews lying around, so today you get a beer I drank way back in the early part of summer, White Monkey from nearby Victory Brewing Company.  This is their popular Golden Monkey aged for three months in white wine barrels from California.  When you take a sip of this Tripel you definitely notice the oak from the wine barrels coming through.  In fact, the oak definitely dominates some of the usual fruit flavors you enjoy in the Golden Monkey, and this one tastes more boozy than it's original version. Complex and delicious, if they produce this again you should grab one.
Ah, early summer.
I  have a friend who is banned by his wife from drinking Golden Monkey, as he underestimates the booze contained in this tasty beer.  Brad, I'm thinking you're also banned from this one.

Thing to Think About Today:
To celebrate all things monkey, I leave you with Proudest Monkey.  Enjoy some Dave Matthews Band for your Saturday.

Day 662: Lancaster Brewing's Kolsch

Since we're experiencing a bit of Indian Summer with temperatures in the mid-80s today, I thought that the German style kolsch from Lancaster Brewing Company would be the perfect beer to review.

Nothing says summer like a creepy sun logo
The kolsch pours a deep golden color with a full white head. It smells and tastes like summer. It has a sweet, grainy aroma that's also grassy and bright. The flavor has a good amount of hops, which prevents it from being too sweet or grainy. It's crisp and easy to drink and just what I needed.

Day 655: Victory White Monkey

Victory Brewing Company's Golden Monkey has a reputation as a phenomenal beer that will kick your ass if you're not careful. It's delicious and smooth and you really have no idea that you're drinking a 9.5% beer.

White Monkey is what you get when Golden Monkey takes a three month sabbatical in white wine barrels. Knowing all that, I had high hopes for the White Monkey.
It poured a rich gold color ale with a thin white head. It has a very rich smell--lots of spices and wine. The taste is resinous and the booze is quite evident. It actually surprised me when I read that the ABV was 9.5%. I would have bet it was a lot higher. There was also a good amount of banana and clove in the flavor. You also really notice the effect of the barrel aging. You get some oak and white wine with each sip.

Day 651: Spring House Big Gruesome

Despite my general thinking that I don't like big stouts and porters during the warm summer months, that didn't stop me from trying a few of the new ones I found this summer (Tired Hands 5 out of 5, DuClaw Sweet Baby Jesus). This one goes in the peanut butter beer category, which surprisingly is actually a category of beer for me now.
This is the Spring House Big Gruesome--a chocolate peanut butter stout. It poured nearly black as night with a chocolate milk color head.  It smells of fresh peanut butter and cocoa. The flavor is predominantly coffee, bitter chocolate with undertones of peanuts. It's creamy of full of dark roasted malt flavor and finishes with a nice bite.

Get your Head Right

Day #586 Headwaters Pale Ale / Victory Brewing Company, Downingtown, PA
Previously from this brewery: So much easier to just click this link rather than have me list them all

Thursday... I think that means it's time for a beer review.  I had a bottle of this in my fridge from a Friday night Phillies game tailgate a few weeks back.  Ah, tailgates with good friends... always fun.  ALWAYS.

You know what else is fun?  Beer reviews, such as this one for a bottle of Headwaters from Victory.  You see a clear dark gold hue with a thin, lingering white head.  Your nose picks up aromas of citrus and light caramel, and when you drink it down you get a mellow bitterness throughout, with a nice mix of pine and lemon, with bready notes from the malt.  At a rather manageable 5.1% ABV, this pale ale is a very good, easy drinking beer - but you shouldn't expect anything less than great beers from Victory!
Get your head right.
Thing to Think About Today:
This song doesn't have much to do with anything I wrote today, but I've realized that it's been ages since I dropped some Sublime into this space.  With their mellow vibe, Sublime is always appropriate for a summer day, don't you agree?  Coming straight out of the summer of '97, let's all relax with some Santeria.

Hands Up!

Day #584 Caskette / Tired Hands Brewing Company, Ardmore, PA
Previously from this brewery:  Is it lazy that I just link you to the Tired Hands tag rather than listing out all of the TH beers?  Maybe.  Or maybe I'm just efficient.

Keeping things brief, as it's been a busy week.  But you're not here to hear about me and my problems, you're here to learn about beer.  I don't know, I guess that's why you're here.  Maybe you're here to feel better about yourself after reading about my problems.  Either way, I'm fine with it.  I do appreciate you reading, regardless of your motivation.

If today is Tuesday, then I'm making one more back in time review from an old visit to Tired Hands.  Up to bat is a glass of Caskette, a "hoppy golden ale."  In a pint glass, this beer is an orange amber color, with a fluffy white head that lingers.  The aroma is of bread and citrus, and when you take your first sip you pick up flavors of cracker, lemon, flowers, and earthy pine.  This beer is light and refreshing - I ended up ordering two.  Sue me.
Fuzzy.  Deal with it.
Thing to Think About Today
I suppose if I'm drinking Tired Hands, I'll close things out with Hands Down by Dashboard Confessional. Enjoy your evening, dear friends.  Be good.  I miss you all.

Five Alive

Day #583 5 Out Of 5 / Tired Hands Brewing Company, Ardmore, PA
Previously from this brewery: Um, many beers.  Easier to just click this link and read about them.

And another Monday comes and goes.  Hopefully you all survived intact.  For today's review I'm going in the Wayback Machine and pulling out an old review from Tired Hands that has been hiding in the back. Today's beer is the 5 Out Of 5, an Imperial Stout.  This beer was touted as a "must drink," and based on how quickly they were going through kegs of this stout, I figured it was worth a try.  In the glass, you seee a dark black color and thin tan head (just like every other stout ever, but I still feel the need to describe the appearance of every beer I drink).  When you inhale, you get..... a lot.  Espresso, nutty, malt.  When you take a sip, there's a crazy mix of maple syrup, peanut, slightly toasted malt, and a big dose of sweetness. Considering this beer was brewed with marshmallow and maple syrup, that sweetness is of no surprise. Stouts aren't usually my cup of tea, but there's so many good things going on in this beer, I would gladly have another.  In fact, I'd like to have this beer with breakfast, if possible.
The always fun window art
Tired Hands changes beers frequently, so I guess I can give them a pass on having a website that never seems to be updated.  I guess.....

Thing to Think About Today:
Okay, so we have a beer called 5 Out of 5, and I drank it in the Philadelphia suburb of Ardmore.  Which of course means it's time to think about Ben Folds (he of the Ben Folds Five) and the catchy Rockin' the Suburbs.  Enjoy your Monday, dear friends.  I sincerely hope you kicked some ass today.

Day 579: Troegs Flying Mouflan

I'm sad to write these words, but this is the final installment in my Troegs Beer Week. But on the upside, I guess it also means another trek out to Hershey to see what's new in their tasting room!
This is Troegs's barleywine--the Flying Mouflan. It pours a hazy brown colored ale with a pale tan head. I swear it smells slightly of Parmesan. The flavor is sharp and quite good. It's very much wine-like and there is a lot of fig in the flavor. There's hints of chocolate. It's spicy and not just peppery spice. As it warmed up a bit, I thought I tasted golden raisins. In my notes, I underlined golden raisins quite emphatically. So be warned, it doesn't just taste like any old raisins. It's the golden raisins.

The fine folks at Troegs suggest cellaring the Flying Mouflan in a cool dark place at 50 degrees for a minimum of four months. That will mellow out the hops and wash away the heat--noting that if one can resist the temptation to drink it all immediately, one would be rewarded with two memorable beers in a single bottle.

Sadly I didn't think to buy a bottle when they were around. Maybe next year I'll succeed.

And in case you're also wondering what a "Flying Mouflan" is, I have no idea. I know I like saying it aloud. Try it. Flying Mouflan! Fun, right? Since I had this one on draft at Troegs' tasting room, I don't have a photo of the bottle. The label depicts a winged, furry bottle cap with a devil's tail. OK. Sure. I suppose after drinking more than one of these--noting they weigh in at 9.3% ABV--that will make sense. I stopped at one. Maybe next year I'll try a second and see if it gives me any clarity.

Until then...FLYING MOUFLAN!

Day 578: Troegs Perpetual IPA

And then there was one...
...one sample of Troegs Perpetual IPA. It poured a crystal clear golden ale with a very white head. It had a super hoppy, pungent aroma. The flavor was bright and bold. Lots of hop flavor. Citrus pith, grapefruit, a little lemon in the finish. If you like hoppy beers, this is one for you.

Upon a bit of research, I learned this beer has ALL THE HOPS! It's brewed with Bravo, Chinook, Mt. Hood, and Nugget. Then it's dry-hopped with Citra and Cascade. So there's a little flavor for you!

Day 577: Troegs Javahead Stout

Random facts about me:

1. I could eat pizza every day of the week. Cheese pizza, why are you so good?

2. I wish I was shinier and happier. Faking it is really exhausting sometimes.

3. I love the song Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke. I love it to an embarrassing degree.

While I was at Troegs, I'm pretty sure I heard this beer sing, "I know you want it" to me.

It's the Troegs Javahead stout. And hot damn! It is an excellent beer. It pours black as night with a tan head. It has a strong coffee aroma. The flavor is mildly bitter. Lots of coffee. Lots of hop. There's some undertones of cola flavor. It drinks with a thin mouthfeel.

Man, I'm a sucker for a good coffee stout.

Day 576: The Troegenator

Day 4 of Troegs Beer Week brings us the Troegenator!

It's a doublebock or alternately a doppelbock. What's that, you ask?

Bocks are relatively strong German lagers. Doppel- or doublebocks are even stronger. Double the bock. Get it? Generally they have a full body and are darker than a regular bock and have a higher ABV. Color ranges from dark amber to nearly black.

So why is there always a goat on the label? Based on a little Internet research...the bock style was a dark, malty, lightly hopped ale first brewed in the 14th century by German brewers in the town of Einbeck. The style was later adopted by Munich brewers in the 17th century and adapted to the new lager style of brewing. Due to their Bavarian accent, citizens of Munich pronounced "Einbeck" as "ein Bock" ("a billy goat"), and thus the beer became known as "bock". To this day, as a visual pun, a goat often appears on bock labels.

Now you know. So how was the Troegenator? It poured a beautiful mahogany color with a tan head. It smells boozy and resinous. It has a thick mouthfeel. The flavor is very malty...lots of caramel. I didn't think it tasted overly alcoholic but it definitely gave me that warm, fuzzy feel inside.

Day 575: Troegs Hopback Amber

Taking this look back at all the great beer I had from Troegs makes me want to road trip to Hershey all over again!
This one is the Hopback amber ale--a flagship beer from Troegs. It's advertised as being packed full of whole hop flowers. Let me tell you that those whole hop flowers certainly do wonders for this beer. It has a fresh hoppy aroma. There's a great spiciness to the flavor and rich caramel notes throughout. It's everything it's advertised to be! I also noted a bit of black tea in it as well.

Day 574: Troegs Pale Ale

Is it weird that my first instinct when seeing a beautiful flight of beers like this is to paint a room a new color? OK, I lie. My first instinct is nomz, nomz, nomz! Then I think about how pretty they are.
Honestly. Look at the one in the middle. Gorgeous!
Troegs Beer Week continues with a Pale Ale review. It poured a very crisp golden color with a minimal white head. It has a peppery hop aroma. The flavor is spicy and smooth. There's a full mouthfeel. After it sat for a bit, I picked up some grapefruit in the nose and noted it had a nice buttery feel.

A note on Troegs facility in Hershey (Pennsylvania). It is a fantastic place to hang out and imbibe. If you've ever been to Green Flash in San Diego, it's a lot like that. Just a chill vibe and a ton of great beer. Don't let Troegs claim to just have a "snack bar" deter you either. There's a great variety of food and it's quite good. The beer flights include six 4.5oz pours so you get a really solid sense of their beer.

Day 573: Troegs DreamWeaver Wheat

Odd fact about me: I love a good Rube Goldberg machine. And this one is amazing!

I'm not sure what part is the best. The angry nerd domino effect? The chomping fish? Golf balls playing percussion? The entire thing is totally amazing. Seriously.

You know what else is amazing? Troegs beer. It's so amazing that I'm declaring it Troegs Beer Week on a Blog Named Brew!

Let's start with DreamWeaver Wheat.
So pretty.
DreamWeaver Wheat pours a hazy wet straw color with a thin white head. It didn't have a powerful aroma, which was a bit surprising. The flavor is creamy banana, peppery with a mild hop finish. It's brewed with wheat, Munich and Pilsner malts, German Northern Brewer hops and uses an open top fermentation. There's also a yeast strain that imparts a peppery, clove taste with a slight hint of banana. Dear Troegs, you got this one right!

I noted that it didn't have much of a head. Per Troegs' website, they recommend "rousing the yeast" at the bottom of the bottle and pouring it into the glass for a big frothy head. I guess that doesn't work when it's on draught.

Day 571: 5 Out of 5 from Tired Hands

I haven't taken an extraordinarily crappy photo like this one in quite awhile. It's almost like my camera knew this beer was going to knock me for a loop and gave me a drunken photo without actually being drunk yet. Hey, camera...thanks. Thanks a lot.
What is pictured in this terribly blurry photograph is the 5 Out of 5--a weird imperial stout from Tired Hands Brewing. Tired Hands is my happy place. Evidence is found in the "Previously Reviewed from" list below. We drink a lot of Tired Hands beer in our house.

5 Out of 5 is brewed with lots of malts, peanut butter, cacao, maple syrup, marshmallow, vanilla bean and One Village espresso. What, what?? 5 Out of 5 is brewed with malts, peanut butter, cacao, maple syrup, marshmallow, vanilla bean and One Village espresso.  What's more amazing is that almost each of these flavors presents itself in the best way possible.

First off, let's talk about the color. It pours nearly black as night in my glass. It had an amazingly thick deep tan head. It's smells rich, sweet and a bit chocolatey. The first sip stopped all four of us who ordered on dead in our tracks. Awkward glances were exchanged as we each tried to figure out what we were tasting. Is it chocolate? Maple syrup? Is that marshmallow? There's the vanilla. Ooh and the nutty flavor from the peanut butter.

Reviews were mixed but overall positive. 5 Out of 5 is a strong beer (10% ABV) with a lot of flavor. It's sweet but not syrupy. If you don't like a sweet beer, this is definitely not for you. But if you're up for a flavor adventure, this is one weird imperial stout that I highly recommend.

Day 569: Tired Hands Lil Lady (2, Electric Boogaloo)

OK so the name of this beer from Tired Hands is not Lil Lady 2 Electric Boogaloo, but it totally should be. Why? Because this is the second iteration of Lil Lady that I've had and every movie sequel's subtitle in my book--thanks to Mr. Blog Named Brew--is Electric Boogaloo. If you don't get the reference, please see this IMDb site for more information.
Sometimes I just want to drink beer and not have to think about it so there isn't a review of the original Lil Lady. This one is made with Rooibos tea, wheat and honeybush tea. It's then fermented with Pennsylvania wildflower honey. It poured a very cloudy, deep orange-y tan color with a white head. The smell is very wheat-y and mild. The flavor is a little on the tart side, which I loved. It has an earthy flavor. There's some unripe fruit in there. The beer's description mentioned strawberries and I think that's pretty accurate.

This is another excellent offering from Tired Hands and I highly recommend it. And if this doesn't sound like your kind of beer, go anyway because you are guaranteed to find one you love.
